What is Russia up to? This is what I’ve been asking myself ever since news of the attacks started surfaced around Friday. From what I understand, Georgia (a staunch US ally), has been having problems with South Ossetian Separatists. South Ossetia has been claiming that they are their own sovereignty since the early 1990’s, though no other county recognizes their claimed sovereignty and all still consider the territory as part of Georgia.
Now what has been going on the last couple days, from what I understand is this: Georgian troops were subduing radical separatists who were causing some kind of trouble. Now since South Ossetia is part of Georgia, Georgia had every right to do this–they were keeping order in their own sovereignty. But then Russia swooped in and started attacking Georgian forces, claiming that Georgia had no right to attack. Now, how Russia came to this conclusion beats me. And it also appears that Russia, over the past couple years, has been in communication with the separatists, while at the same time supplying everyone in the area with Russian passports. What the hell does this look like! If you ask me–it looks like Russia is moving forward with a premeditated invasion of Georgian territory!!
And Russia is claiming Georgia is in the wrong! On what grounds!! Georgia has now been trying to come to a cease fire with Russia and has heard no response from them. While at the same time Russian forces are continuing to move towards the capital of Georgia (20 miles). Do you really think it was a coincidence that this all started on the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympics, when many world leaders were attending that event? I want to know what Russia is up to and why there hasn’t been any measures taken against Russia by any other countries to stop this unprovoked attack.
